Regional and Cumberland
County groups today said
they will take an active role in promoting agritourism and outdoor recreation
in the county.

The groups received a $4,000 grant from the South Mountain Partnership to produce an 18-page pocket guide and map, said Rebecca Wiser, the farmland
preservation coordinator for the Cumberland County Planning Department.

The Cumberland Area Economic Development Corp., Cumberland
Valley Visitors Bureau
and county planning department in Carlisle, and The
Capital Resource Conservation and Development Area Council
in Swatara Township,
Dauphin County,
are leading the effort to promote agritourism in Cumberland County.

The South Mountain Partnership is a coalition of federal,
state and local government entities, conservation and tourism groups, and
education institutions. It seeks to promote and preserve the regions of Adams, Cumberland, Franklin and York counties around South Mountain
through agriculture and outdoor recreation.

Money for the grant also came from the state Department of
Conservation and Natural Resources
, Wiser said. The groups producing the guide
have to match the partnership’s grant, she said.

The idea for the guide came about when county and tourism
officials began discussing reprinting a local produce buying guide that is a of
couple years old, Wiser said. That publication served as a locator to buy fresh
produce from Central Pennsylvania farmers, but
didn’t include other agriculture businesses or outdoor recreation, she said.

“Something like an alpaca farm wouldn’t be included in that,
but obviously all agribusiness is very important to our economy here,” she
said.

The publication will include farms, roadside produce stands,
farmers markets, hiking trails, parks and other Cumberland County
attractions and businesses, Wiser said.
