Central Penn Business Journal reporter Michael Sadowski on Wednesday morning appeared on WITF-FM, the midstate’s public radio station, to talk about the appeal hearing for the merger of the two biggest health care providers in the Harrisburg area.
WITF reporter Ben Allen questioned Sadowski on the hearing concerning the proposed merger between Derry Township-based Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and PinnacleHealth System of Harrisburg.
The two systems announced their intention to join in 2014, but in December 2015, the Federal Trade Commission and the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office blocked the merger, saying it would create a monopoly of health care providers in the Harrisburg area.
In May, a U.S. District Court judge in Harrisburg ruled the merger could proceed, finding against the government, and Tuesday’s hearing was an appeal of that decision.
A ruling from the appeal court on Tuesday’s hearing in Philadelphia is expected later this summer.
