The state Senate approved a bill today amending the state Uniform Construction Code (UCC). Sen. Bob Regola (R-Westmoreland County) introduced Senate Bill 437 to erase a mandate in the UCC that requires new foundation and retaining walls in residences to be built with anchor bolts.
Anchor bolts are needed in homes in coastal areas and earthquake-prone areas, but not in Pennsylvania, Regola said in a written statement.
Anchor bolts can add $3,000 to the price of construction, Regola said.
The bill passed the House and the Senate and awaits a signature from Gov. Ed Rendell.
