CommunityAid, a faith-based nonprofit and thrift retailer, plans to open a store and donation center in a former Bon-Ton store in York Township

The nonprofit announced its plans Thursday at the site of the new store, its sixth, which is at the Queensgate Shopping Center.

CommunityAid plans to use 59,000 square feet of the former Bon-Ton, with 40,000 square feet earmarked for retail, said Rob Kole, president of the board of directors for CommunityAid. The remaining space will be used for processing donations.

“This building is where Queensgate began in 1962. Knowing that history, as well as the importance of being a community-minded retailer, we are blessed to be the next chapter of this incredible story,” Kole said.

The total space inside the former Bon-Ton is 114,608 square feet, according to previous reports. The fate of the remaining space has yet to be determined, said Bob Hauer, director of community relations for CommunityAid.

Over the next few months, the building will be gutted, said Kole. The floors and ceiling will be redone, and a drive-up donation area will be added, among other renovations.

The project, which is slated for completion in spring 2019, will create the largest thrift store in York County and the second-largest location for CommunityAid, said Kole. The retailer’s largest location is in Monroe Township, Snyder County.

Based in Hampden Township, Cumberland County, CommunityAid employs 398 full- and part-time workers. The York Township location will add an additional 80 full- and part-time employees.

Since 2009, CommunityAid has given more than $11.4 million to local schools, churches, synagogues, temples and other nonprofits. The company partners with more than 760 churches, charities and first responders.
