Economic development officials leading a midstate bid to land Amazon’s second North American headquarters are looking for community input.
The Harrisburg Regional Chamber and Capital Region Economic Development Corp., together with the Dauphin County Redevelopment Authority, announced Tuesday that they “are seeking community ideas, suggestions and good wishes” to be submitted as they prepare the proposal, which is due to Amazon by Oct. 19.
As reported last week, the former Harrisburg State Hospital site in Dauphin County, owned by the state Department of General Services, is the “target site” that will be pitched to online retailer Amazon as the location for “HQ2,” a $5 billion project expected to employ as many as 50,000 people.
“Ideas and suggestions from the community may be included in the proposal and good wishes will be sent along with the proposal,” a release from the development agencies said. “The team pulling the proposal together feel that this is the most efficient way to gather ideas and best wishes.”
Those ideas and wishes should be emailed to HQ2@hbgrc.org. They should be signed, and include contact information beyond an email address.
Those who submit proposals are giving permission for their ideas to be posted to the Chamber and CREDC website, and potentially shared in the Amazon proposal, officials said.
The 295-acre state hospital site straddles the Harrisburg-Susquehanna Township border, lying mostly in the township. There are 45 buildings on the property. They account for more than 2 million square feet of space. The state has been looking to sell the campus for redevelopment.
According to Amazon’s request for proposals, the new headquarters will initially require at least 500,000 square feet of space if using existing structures, a greenfield site of about 100 acres, or some combination of the two.
