Census: Cumberland County fastest-growing county since 2010

Cumberland County has been the fastest-growing county in the commonwealth since the last Census in 2010, according to the U.S. Census Bureau and analysis from the Pennsylvania State Data Center.

Between April 1, 2010, and July 1, 2014, the county added 8,354 residents, or 3.5 percent.

Cumberland County’s population was 235,408 as of July 1, 2014, according to the Census data.

Centre County, home to Penn State University, was No. 2 with a 3.1 percent growth rate. Centre County added 4,761 residents over that span, according to the Census data.

Chester and Lancaster counties were next with 2.7 percent growth rates. Lancaster added 13,872 residents, while Chester added 13,638.

Only Philadelphia County (34,291) and Montgomery County (16,984) added more residents, according to the Census data.

The biggest losers over that span were Cameron County, which lost 5.5 percent of its population, followed by Cambria at 4.1 percent and Susquehanna at 3.3 percent.

For just a one-year period between July 1, 2013, and July 1, 2014, Cumberland County also led the way with a 1 percent gain, according to the Census data. Chester and Lancaster counties followed with 0.64 percent and 0.6 percent gains, respectively.

There were an estimated 604,903 births and 539,878 deaths in the commonwealth over that span, according to the Census data. Also, international migration outpaced domestic outmigration, resulting in a net gain of 29,004 persons.

Lancaster County was No. 2 for greatest natural increase with 10,151.

On largest net migration, Allegheny was No. 1 with 12,588, while Cumberland County was No. 3 with 6,799.

Philadelphia County is the most populous county in Pennsylvania with nearly 1.6 million residents, followed by Allegheny and Montgomery counties.

Nationally, those counties rank at No. 23, No. 34 and No. 72 for largest populations, according to the Census data.
