Carlisle Cos. Q2 earnings gain; Penn National, HMA drop

Carlisle Cos. Inc., a Cumberland County manufacturer and distributor, grew its earnings 70 percent in the second quarter compared with a year ago, while Dauphin County casino operator Penn National Gaming Inc. and regional hospital operator Health Management Associates Inc. both saw earnings slides in the quarter.

North Carolina-based Carlisle Cos., which has distribution facilities and its construction materials segment in Carlisle, posted second quarter net income of $92.8 million, or $1.45 per diluted share, according to the company.

Analysts had estimated earnings per share of $1.25, according to Yahoo Finance.

“We are seeing signs of moderating demand in some of our key markets in the second half of the year. Nevertheless, we are still positive about 2012,” said David A. Roberts, Carlisle Cos. chairman, CEO and president. “We maintain our target for sales growth in the mid-teens, including acquisitions, and continued year-over-year margin improvement.”

Carlisle Cos. trades its shares on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol CSL.

Florida-based Heath Management Associates reported net income of $36.9 million for the quarter, a 24 percent drop from the year-ago quarter, according to the company, which operates hospitals in Cumberland and Lancaster counties.

The company posted earnings per share of 14 cents, down from 19 cents a year ago. Analysts had estimated 21 cents per share, according to Yahoo Finance.

However, Health Management Associates noted that if a $22 million interest-rate swap accounting and market-to-market adjustment is included, it posted net income of $53.6 million, making its earnings per diluted share 21 cents.

The company trades its shares on the NYSE under the ticker symbol HMA. It owns Carlisle Regional Medical Center, Heart of Lancaster and Lancaster Regional Medical Center.

Penn National Gaming, based in Wyomissing, Berks County, posted net income of $66.7 million for the quarter, or 12 percent less than a year ago. Earnings per diluted share were 63 cents, down from 71 cents a year ago.

Analysts estimated 63 cents a share, according to Yahoo Finance.

Penn National’s East/West division, which includes Hollywood Casino at Penn National Race Course in Dauphin County, was the company’s strongest segment with net revenue of slightly less than $348.7 million, a 9.4 percent increase from the year-ago quarter.

Penn National trades its shares on the Nasdaq under the ticker symbol PENN.
