Senior-living provider Calvary Homes has started on an $11 million renovation and expansion of its 38-acre campus in Manheim Township.

Led by West Earl Township-based Benchmark Construction Co. Inc., the construction effort will divide Calvary’s nursing care facilities into two separate residential-style neighborhoods. Each facility will have its own kitchen and dining spaces, living and activity areas, a porch with a garden and a whirlpool spa.

As part of the project, most semi-private rooms will be converted to private rooms, a growing trend among long-term care facilities. There are currently 22 semi-private rooms and one private room. After the renovation, there will be just three semi-private rooms and 39 private rooms for residents.

In addition to the room conversion, Calvary is adding 10 new personal-care rooms.

Other campus changes

But the campus construction is not just limited to nursing care. Other changes also are in the works.

One of the biggest efforts will be expanding the campus’ Bausman Center. The project will include a new community center with a wood shop, library, craft room, conference room and recreation room. There also will be a new chapel and welcome center entrance.

In addition Calvary is relocating its gift shop and hair salon and moving and enlarging its therapy suite. An outdoor dining deck and garden will be added to the building’s cafe, plus there will be 65 parking spaces added.

Four new two-bedroom apartments also will be added to the building. Meanwhile, three existing apartments in Cathedral Hall will be converted to two-bedroom units.

Calvary also will demolish an older apartment building and replace it with two new cottages.

Benchmark officials said the personal-care units are expected to be done by July. The addition will get started this summer. The overall project is slated for completion by July 2019.

Calvary has about 300 housing units and currently serves about 400 residents.
