Bon-Ton cites ‘challenging’ November as holiday sales dip 3 percent
Bon-Ton, which has corporate offices in York County, joins a growing list of department-store and smaller retail chains that posted soft holiday sales.
Some of those companies, including Sears and Macy’s, have announced store closings due to sluggish sales.
Bon-Ton, which saw business improve from Thanksgiving through the end of the year, did not mention any possible store closings. Kathryn Bufano, the company’s president and CEO, said mobile demand has been on the rise.
And, she added, the company did well over the holidays in several categories, including men’s big and tall, furniture, women’s outwear and intimate apparel.
“We are pleased to see the traction we are gaining on our merchandising initiatives, despite weak mall traffic trends,” Bufano said.
The company will report fourth-quarter and fiscal 2016 earnings on March 14. Bon-Ton shares are traded on the NASDAQ under the ticker symbol BONT.
