Biggest movers: 15 companies moved 10 points or more in the Top 100 from year ago

On CPBJ’s list of Top 100 private companies, 15 firms moved 10 points or more in the rankings compared with their standing a year ago. Of those, nine saw an increase in revenue, ranging from 18 percent to 90 percent.

What prompted such significant change? A few trends can be discerned.

Construction, design and mechanical contractors did well, including those associated with HVAC sales and service.

Among them, Silver Spring Township-based R.S. Mowery & Sons Inc. led the pack, climbing from 39 to 23 on the list. That jump was fueled by a more than 90 percent growth in revenue, up $65.4 million to nearly $137.6 million in 2015.

What has the company’s year looked like? As reporter Jason Scott explains in this year’s edition, R.S. Mowery & Sons recently rebranded itself Mowery, an effort to create a more progressive marketing strategy while memorializing its family roots.

But Mowery also has some new faces: David Cross is the first non-family CEO in the company’s 91-year history. He takes over a company on the move. It has hired field supervisors, project managers and estimators, and added new technology.

Known for projects in the industrial, higher education, automotive retail and senior living markets, Mowery also is looking to branch out into new regions and is in search of new opportunities, as Scott’s story details.

Other growing construction, contracting and mechanical companies on the list:

• Lancaster County’s Elam G. Stoltzfus Jr. Inc. (which does business as EG Stoltzfus) rose from 53 to 41, propelled by a 52.6 percent revenue increase, up to nearly $76.5 million.

• Also in Lancaster, HVAC Distributors Inc. rose 10 places to 44 on its $67.4 million revenue, an increase of nearly 35.6 percent.

• CCS Building Group LLC, again from Lancaster County, jumped 10 spots, to number 76. Its revenue increased by 21 percent, to $35.1 million.

• York County mechanical contractor James Craft & Son Inc. was up from 120 to 86, breaking into the Top 100. Its revenue increased by 76 percent, to $30.5 million.

• Johnston Construction Co., also of York County, broke into the Top 100 by climbing from 108 to 94 thanks to its 32.7 percent revenue bump, hitting $28.2 million.

In other categories:

• Dauphin County’s Triple Crown Corp. Inc., which provides leasing, sales, real estate development services — in addition to construction, construction management and remodeling — broke into the list, climbing from 115 to 90 on revenue growth of 50.7 percent, hitting $29.7 million.

• JFC Staffing Cos. of Cumberland County jumped from 92 to 80, with revenue up 18.3 percent to $32.3 million.

• York’s St. Onge Co., a supply-chain strategy specialist, rose from 118 to 98, achieving nearly $26.7 million in revenue, up about 27.2 percent.
