ADVERTISTING/MARKETING
EMJAY Display Inc., Lancaster, was chosen as a Bronze Award winner in the POP-Design of the Times display competition in New York City. The winning entry was designed and produced for the New York firm of Clarke Advertising Inc. for its client, Hankook Tires. Entries in the competition were judged on how well they used a particular display type. EMJAY’s entry was in the free-standing automotive category.
BANKING/FINANCIAL
Members 1st Federal Credit Union received two from the Pennsylvania Credit Union League as part of the league’s annual communications contest. In the division for credit unions with assets above $100 million, Members 1st won second place in the Web site category. The credit union took the first-place award in the annual reports category for its 2001 publication. Members 1st has 15 local branches.
COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY
Cargas Systems, Lancaster, was named to the Microsoft Business Solutions Presidents Club. This recognition honors Microsoft Great Plains partners whose commitment to clients is reflected in their business performance and high level of sales achievement.
NONPROFITS
Lyn Buckler-Bergdoll, president of Junior Achievement of South Central Pennsylvania Inc. in York, received the nonprofit organization’s 2002 Karl Flemke Pioneer Achievement Award. The award is given to first-time Junior Achievement presidents who have demonstrated outstanding contributions and achievements to the organization. Buckler-Bergdoll has been with the York Junior Achievement office for nearly four years and has been president for almost three of those four years. The Karl Flemke Pioneer Achievement Award is named after Karl Flemke, president of Junior Achievement from 1982 to 1994.
Junior Achievement of Central Pennsylvania, Lancaster, received a Peak Performance Award, a Collaboration Award and a MetLife Foundation Entrepreneurial Award at the Junior Achievement Global Leadership Conference. The Peak Performance Award is presented to JA offices for performance in areas such as student growth and revenue growth. The Collaboration Award is given for outstanding service that benefits the entire organization. This year, the Central Pennsylvania Junior Achievement collaborated with all the offices in Pennsylvania to be registered as one of the educational organizations eligible to receive special tax benefits. The MetLife award is designed to foster entrepreneurship and innovation.
OTHER
Ron Kamionka of Kamionka Entertainment Group was named The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s 2002 Man of the Year. Kamionka was named based on his philanthropic success in generating funds for The Leukemia & Lymphorna Society over an eight-week period. Kamionka raised more than $18,000 during this time frame Every dollar raised is counted as one vote, and the funds he raisedgave him the most votes to win his title. Kamionka is the managing partner of Kamionka Entertainment Group. He owns and operates Wanda’s Deck and Dance Club, Eclipse Night Club and 5:01 Downtown.
Sixteen employees in the central office of the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PENNDOT) have been presented with Star of Excellence Awards based on outstanding service. The Star of Excellence Award is presented annually to a group of employees at PENNDOT who demonstrate enthusiasm, diligence, and drive in the workplace. The recipients span the entire range of personnel, from clerks, secretaries and highway maintenance workers to managers, engineers and bureau directors. Among the award recipients are: Gregory T. Baranec, distributed systems supervisor, bureau of information systems; Judy A. Coy, human resource analyst, bureau of human resources; Charles I. Harpster, photogrammetry technician, bureau of design; Robert A. Houser, clerk, bureau of driver licensing; Robert J. Pento, civil engineer manager, bureau of highway safety and traffic engineering; Diane Robinson, clerical supervisor, bureau of driver licensing; Leonard F. Shebosky, reissuance project manager, bureau of motor vehicles; Michael W. Baker, transportation planning manager, center for program development and management; Ira C. Beckerman, historic preservation specialist supervisor, bureau of design; Harold L. Ferguson Jr., senior civil engineer manager, bureau of construction; and Randy R. Haldeman, acting civil engineer manager, bureau of rail freight, ports and waterways
The Pennsylvania Chamber of Business and Industry named the Harrisburg Region a 2002 Outstanding Pennsylvania Community. Encompassing Harrisburg and Cumberland, Dauphin and Perry counties, the region features traditional manufacturing, service firms, opportunities in medicine, new technology and biotechnology, as well as major colleges and universities.
The city of Harrisburg received the 2002 Partnership for Safe Water Achievement Award from the Pennsylvania Section-American Water Works Association and Partnership for Safe Water. The Harrisburg Authority owns the Harrisburg Water System, and the city’s Bureau of Water operates it. The water system provides nearly
15 million gallons of fresh water daily to Harrisburg and parts of four other municipalities.
