CAT bans smoking at Harrisburg bus center

The new regulation applies to Capital Area Transit’s downtown transfer center, at Second and Market streets, in accordance with the city’s Smoke-Free Air Law, CAT spokesman Robert Philbin said Monday.
The transfer center at Market Square is an open-air station with bus shelters, leased by the bus company from the city of Harrisburg.
No smoking signs are posted throughout the area, Philbin said. Anyone found smoking in the shelters or on the outdoor waiting platforms will be asked to stop immediately or leave the station.
City code enforcement officials, parks and recreation officials and Harrisburg police will have authority to enforce the law.
“This action will help create a better environment at the CAT downtown Transfer Center,” general manager Tom Reynolds said, making it cleaner and healthier for bus passengers as well as the general public walking by.
Based in Harrisburg, CAT provides public bus service in Dauphin and Cumberland counties. The system’s weekday ridership is about 10,000 passengers per day, officials have said.
