After whittling down its inventory and closing its stores at the end of August, a midstate home furniture chain officially filed for bankruptcy last month.
Dauphin County-based RTA Furniture Distributors Inc., which does business as Just Cabinets Furniture & More, filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy on Sept. 14. A meeting of creditors is slated for Nov. 2 in Harrisburg, according to documents filed with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania.
Just Cabinets had 11 stores, including four in Central Pennsylvania. In late July, the company began posting “store closing” and “everything must go” notices. At the time the company did not return calls or emails about the liquidation process and what prompted it.
The bankruptcy filing lists assets of $655,180.42 — primarily office furniture, fixtures and computer equipment — and liabilities of nearly $6.1 million.
The company, which reported gross revenue of $27.2 million last year, has a customer mailing list with 26,000 names, but no real estate assets, according to the filing.
A separate limited liability company owns the company’s real estate, including its corporate office and warehouse on Linglestown Road in Lower Paxton Township that is listed for $5.5 million.
Just Cabinets was founded in 1979 by Mort Bernstein, who also started Ollie’s Bargain Outlet. His son, Ted Bernstein, has been the president of Just Cabinets since 1990.
