Lancaster County’s ACI Composites Inc. is making a monster.

The 46-foot structure, known as Miles the Monster, is being created for Dover International Speedway in Dover, Del. Miles is Dover’s signature icon and has been featured in comic books and molded into action figures, trophies and plush toys, said Gary Camp, spokesman for the speedway.

Miles is being sculpted out of a steel frame, which is covered in foam and will eventually be sprayed with fiberglass. He will be disassembled and shipped by way of six flat-bed trucks near the end of April to his permanent home outside of the fourth turn at the speedway.

Construction began on the sculpture in December. It is part of $6 million worth of improvements being made at the speedway this year, Camp said.

East Lampeter Township-based ACI Composites creates custom designs and manufactures fiberglass-reinforced plastic products and components for the architectural, commercial and industrial markets.

Dover International Speedway, a motorsports facility, is owned by Dover Motorsports Inc. The complex is in the midst of a $25 million capital-improvement project.
