Catherine E. Walters, Esquire, Bybel Rutledge LLP

Employers continue to face a challenging array of ever-changing workplace laws and trends. This fast-paced session will update employers on the hottest topics and trends of 2018, from marijuana to privacy, service animals, harassment and the explosion of discrimination claims; examine the most recent U.S. Supreme Court cases and their impact on the workplace; discuss changes in federal agency regulations and policy (EEOC, Wage and Hour, OSHA, NLRB and OFCCP); highlight the growing trend of states that are churning out employee-protective laws and how they mesh, or don’t mesh, with parallel federal laws; and provide a forecast of what employers can expect in 2019.

2:20PM-3:15PM: Developing the Leader Within You
Neil Robertson, Principal, Robertson Insurance & Risk Management

Understanding that everything rises and falls on leadership, your ability to succeed depends on your ability to develop yourself and others as leaders. In this discussion, Developing the Leader Within You, Neil will focus on essential leadership principles that no matter your leadership avenue – business, nonprofit, education, church or family – you will have a greater understanding of your own leadership ability and ways to increase your leadership effectiveness. The session will cover a range of leadership topics and will answer some of the following questions: What is leadership? Can leadership be developed? What are some of the essential principles of leadership? and What are the different levels of leadership I should be working towards and how do I grow into them?

3:15PM-4:00PM: #MeToo and You – How Employers are Responding One Year Later
Catherine E. Walters, Esquire, Bybel Rutledge LLP

The #MeToo movement began as a listening campaign in October of 2017, but quickly morphed into an internet and cultural phenomenon, empowering victims to speak out and forcing us, as a society, to look directly into the abyss of sexual harassment, violence and abuse that has become a part of our culture. This session will cover the movement’s short-term and long-term impacts on the workplace and provide employers with tools and information to make appropriate cultural changes, including updating harassment, investigation and workplace conduct policies, enhancing investigation techniques and ensuring that employees, both female and male, feel safe working together in a healthy environment.
