York County furniture store to change hands
After more than eight decades leading a York County furniture and mattress store, its family owners are retiring and transferring control to longtime managers.
Smith Village Home Furnishings, located in Jacobus, was founded in 1932 by Bruce V. Smith and handed down to his children: Dallas Smith, Susan E. Smith Hake, Donald Smith, Anna Mae Gerlich and Dale Smith. Its current owners are Dallas S. Smith and Susan E. Smith Hake, who will now join their siblings in retirement.
The store's new owners will be Gary Inners, warehouse manager; William Ream, store manager and buyer; Colleen Schaffner, director of advertising and buyer; and Mark Warner, controller. Transfer of ownership will be completed will be completed in March 2019. The financial terms were not disclosed.
“We came up with a plan to transfer ownership to our four loyal, long-term managers, in recognition of their dedication and ability to operate the business successfully," said Dallas Smith, the store's president. "Each of them have been at Smith Village for over 20 years.
Under the deal, the Smith family members will retire but the Smith Village name will live on. Smith Village Home Furnishings and the Furniture Outlet, a clearance center located across the street, will continue doing business at the same locations in Jacobus, with the current employees and management team in place.
“For our customers, there will be no change at all, and really not for our employees either,” Smith said.
Smith Village Home Furnishings offers a selection of living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms, home office, mattresses and accessories. The business has 37 employees.
