State issues more permits for medical marijuana dispensaries
The Pennsylvania Department of Health today issued 23 permits for companies to dispense medical marijuana.
The latest businesses include GTI Pennsylvania LLC at 507 North York St. in Mechanicsburg; Harvest of South Central PA LLC at 2500 N. Sixth St., in Harrisburg; and Local Dispensaries LLC at 137 S. 17th St. in Harrisburg.
The state agency said the companies have six months to become operational before they can begin dispensing medical marijuana.
“The permitting of these locations as part of Phase II of the medical marijuana program will ensure more people have access to medical marijuana close to home,” Secretary of Health Dr. Rachel Levine said in a news release. “Medical marijuana is an essential form of treatment for Pennsylvanians suffering from one of 21 serious medical conditions. This step continues the growth of our scientific, medically-based medical marijuana program.”
The latest dispensaries represent a second round of permits awarded under the state's medical marijuana program. Permits in the first round were awarded in June 2017.
Once all all the second-round dispensaries are operational, there will be 79 dispensaries throughout the state. Each dispensary permit holder is eligible to open three locations.
Some dispensary permit holders have for now opted not to open all eligible locations.
