Letter from the editor: Welcome to the manufacturing issue

After years of watching skilled workers retire, manufacturers are making an all-out push to attract younger people to the factory floor.
It is just one sign of how manufacturers are adapting to changing tastes – not just in the workplace, but also on store shelves.
This special manufacturing issue of the Central Penn Business Journal explores several examples of those adaptations.
Our cover story looks at how manufacturers are working to make their industry more attractive – to counter the tastes of young people who might think college is their only option for a good career. It sounds like the industry is making some headway.
But with taste in focus, many of our stories revolve around food: apples, soybeans, beer and milk.
We also discuss changes in our taste for imports, or at least in how we treat them as they cross the border. Tariffs have emerged as one of the most pressing concerns for local manufacturers, and you can read more about the issues on page 3.
