Downtown Inc will be hustling on Friday to welcome several businesses to the city of York.

Kicking off October’s First Friday, the organization is holding five ribbon-cutting ceremonies, welcoming three photography studios, a new museum exhibit, a mini-theatrical space and a renovated York Emporium, said Silas Chamberlin, CEO of Downtown Inc and vice president of economic and community development with the York County Economic Alliance.

Last month, the improvement and economic development nonprofit hosted ribbon-cutting ceremonies for three new businesses.

"Our downtown continues to grow at a frenetic pace. The diversity of our ribbon-cutting celebrations this week also reinforces that York is growing in many different ways," said Chamberlin. "From small businesses reinvigorating their current spaces to the emergence of new community amenities, we continue to see investment in our city."

Photography businesses Christina Julia Photography, sarah b photography and The Hursts & Co. have moved into the second floor of Redeux Vintage & Handmade Marketplace at 113 S. Duke St. The studios specialize in family, maternity and newborn, natural boudoir and lifestyle and product photography. A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held at 2 p.m.

The William C. Goodridge Freedom Center at 123 E. Philadelphia St. has opened the Goodridge Daguerreotype Studio, which is a recreation of Glenalvin Goodridge’s photographic studio. Glenalvin Goodridge  was the son of William C. Goodridge, a prominent 19th-century York entrepreneur who helped free slaves through the Underground Railroad. The studio features an extensive collection of historic photographs with an emphasis on images of African Americans, donated by Larry West of Washington, D.C., according to a press release.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place at 3:30 p.m.

At 4:30 p.m., Downtown Inc will mark the installation of three tabletop chessboards and chairs in Continental Square. The artistic chessboards were created by Richard Craighead, owner of Inclusive Arts Movement of York. They are open for anyone to use.

A ribbon cutting also is scheduled for a small theatrical space established by Weary Arts Group. WAG Studio West is at Union Lutheran Church on 408 W. Market St. It is a second location for Weary, which operates WAG Studio East at 2422 S. Queen St. The new location is designed to improve the organization's outreach efforts to the community.

A musical number and meet and greet will follow the ribbon-cutting ceremony, which takes place at 5:30 p.m. Refreshments will also be available. Open stage/karaoke and dance exhibitions will also be taking place until about 9 p.m.

The York Emporium will re-open its doors after undergoing remodeling courtesy of Royal Square Development and Construction. It is the first time since World War II that the building has undergone any renovations. A ceremony will take place at 7 p.m. and feature refreshments and live music.
