The top editors at the Central Penn Business Journal have recently expanded their leadership roles to the Lehigh Valley area.

Editor Joel Berg and managing editor Cathy Hirko are now overseeing the news department for Lehigh Valley Business.

Business Journal and Central Penn Parent publisher ShaunJude McCoach views the move as an incredible opportunity for both teams.

“It will allow us to be more collaborative and will expand our coverage area beyond our traditional territory boundaries,” McCoach said. “Mike (O'Rourke) and I have been working together for over five years now and I look forward to partnering with him even more so with this move.”

O’Rourke is the publisher of Lehigh Valley Business.

Both Berg and Hirko have extensive newsroom experience.

Berg joined the Central Penn Business Journal in May 2015 after teaching journalism and writing classes for York College and Gettysburg College.

Before that he covered numerous beats for the Business Journal and regularly freelanced for local and national publications, including the Patriot-News in Harrisburg and trade publication American Banker. His work in reporting and editorial writing has been recognized statewide and nationally.

“I am looking forward to my new role at Lehigh Valley Business and to our continuing coverage of this dynamic region of Pennsylvania,” Berg said.

Hirko joined the Business Journal in February 2016 after holding several editor positions with the York Daily Record and The Evening Sun in Hanover. She has been recognized statewide for her coverage of breaking news and women business leaders.

“I’m excited to be working with both newsrooms. It’s imperative that both Lehigh Valley and Central Penn newsrooms still work independently. That’s not changing,” Hirko said. “The advantage to our readers is that we will find innovative ways to leverage the strengths of our teams for both markets.”

Berg and Hirko will be spending time in both coverage areas on a regular basis.

Congratulations to both of you. While I do not know Cathy, I know Joel well and he is a consummate professional. Judging from their work, I suspect they will raise the level of the Lehigh Valley publication while also continuing to improve the extremely informative
