The owners of a Spring Grove funeral home expect to break ground in the next few weeks to build another facility in Springettsbury Township.

Beck Funeral Home & Cremation Service Inc. purchased land at 3670 E. Market St. earlier this year. Christopher M. Beck, owner of the Beck Funeral Home, declined to provide a price.

Beck intends to build a 9,000 square-foot funeral home and a parking lot that will hold more than 100 cars on the two-acre property. He anticipates that the new funeral home will be up in running by January 2019.

"There were no state-of-the-art, modern facilities in that area and we saw an opportunity to change that," he said.

Beck operates a funeral home and crematorium at 175 N. Main St. in Spring Grove. He and his wife, Laura Beck, purchased the funeral home in 2009 from Robert E. Irwin and his wife, Carole. The Irwins purchased the home from the Sauter family in 1982, which established the business in 1887.

Since purchasing the Spring Grove property in 2009, the Becks have remodeled its chapel and added a crematorium. It is now known as Beck Funeral Home & Cremation Service Inc.

Before owning his own funeral home, Beck was general manager of a Philadelphia-based funeral firm for 12 years. His son, Nicholas Beck recently finished mortuary school and will have his license by the time the new funeral home opens. His other children, Vincent and Victoria Beck, have also indicated an interest in joining the family business.
