United Zion Retirement Community appointed Sue Verdegem as its new CEO after Phil Burkholder resigned last November.

Burkholder stepped down to accept an executive director position at Integrace Fairhaven, a retirement community in Maryland.

LaDonna Burns, director of human resources at United Zion, served as interim CEO and nursing home administrator until Verdegem took the helm July 1.

Verdegem has over three decades of experience in the nonprofit, faith-based, senior-living sector. She previously served as senior executive vice president of finance and administration at Tel Hai Retirement Community in Honey Brook.

"I'm delighted to be part of an organization with a long history of outstanding retirement living service and to be part of creating a dynamic future for United Zion. We are thrilled to be opening our new wing this fall," Verdegem said in a statement.

As part of her executive duties, Verdegem will be overseeing a $9 million construction and expansion project on United Zion's 11-acre campus in Warwick Township, Lancaster County.

The project, which began in May 2017, will add 10 independent living apartments and 12 private rooms in a skilled nursing area.

Founded in 1905, United Zion currently offers 11 private and 48 semi-private rooms, serving 59 residents. After the expansion project, it will have 59 private living spaces, some with a shared bath.

The new living areas are slated for occupancy this fall.
