Mid-week holiday break: One, two or more days off?Today might feel like a Monday for some, but the start of a long weekend for others
This year, freedom rang in on a Wednesday.
While some employees that work Monday through Friday have returned to work today, others have extended their Fourth of July celebrations into today and even into the weekend.
Hampden Township-based Post Acute Medical LLC, for example, sent out an email to all of its corporate employees seeking recommendations on dealing with the holiday falling into the middle of the week. Instead of arbitrarily making a decision for everyone, the company decided to give its employees a say, said Renee Holloman, senior vice president and chief people officer for the company.
“It’s really hard to have a holiday on a Wednesday,” she said. “So we decided to let employees be a part of that decision in a fun and cool way.”
In addition to having Wednesday off, employees were gifted Thursday off as well. Employees were also given the option to use personal time for Friday off for a five-day weekend.
But those that want to come in on Thursday or Friday won’t be forced to take the time off, Holloman added.
And some can’t take the time off.
Businesses has been especially busy for steel distributors like Habot Steel Co. in West Manchester Township. As of late, many employees have been putting in time on Saturdays and some have even put in a half-day on Wednesday just to keep up with the demand.
Similar to Post Acute Medical, employees from the York County Economic Alliance (YCEA) did not have to come into work today as the organization closed its offices. The alliance also closed its offices early on July 3, said Kevin Schreiber, president and CEO of the YCEA. He also noted that a number of employees planned on taking a personal day on Friday, as well.
A number employers say they take holidays case by case. Some holidays fall on a set date each year, like July 4, where as others fall on a specific day, like Thanksgiving, which falls on the fourth Thursday each November. Last year, for example, Post Acute Medical employees were given Black Friday -- the day after Thanksgiving -- off.
Lancaster-based law firm Barley Snyder LLP closed its office yesterday, but not today.
“Last year, with Fourth of July on a Tuesday, we closed on the third and Fourth of July to set up a four-day weekend for our attorneys, staff and their families. We’re closing the office for just Fourth of July this year, and we’ll evaluate the situation later this year for 2019 when Fourth of July falls on a Thursday,” said Jeff Lobach, Barley Snyder’s managing partner, in a statement. “As for this holiday, any other holiday, or just a day where someone is out of the office, our attorneys pride themselves on being accessible when their clients need them.”
Of the more than 30 people that participated in CPBJ’s online poll on Facebook, 90 percent went back to work and 10 percent had an extra day off. Those polled on Twitter all shared that they were returning to work today.
