Remodeled Yorktowne to include office space for businesses
The future of the Yorktowne Hotel is starting to take shape and, according to officials on the $30 million project, it will be more than just a hotel when it reopens late next year.
After hearing requests from the business community for space in the hotel, its design has been tweaked to include 3,000 square feet of office space, said Blanda Nace, project manager for the Yorktowne and director of strategic development for the York County Economic Alliance.
"It won’t be just a hotel with a restaurant out front," he said.
The space will be located on the first floor and have its own exit at the back of the hotel which will be known as the Yorktowne Hotel, Tapestry Collection by Hilton.
Interested businesses should contact Nace or Jack Kay, chairman of the York County Industrial Authority.
The announcement of the space for businesses came during a forum the authority held Thursday night at PeoplesBank Park.
The idea of adding an office space to the nearly century-old hotel was generated during the authority’s first forum held a year and a half ago.
It would not be the first time the hotel has hosted outside businesses. PeoplesBank operated a branch at the hotel before consolidating its two downtown York branches into one location on Continental Square.
Public input from a first meeting on potential renovations included the addition of a rooftop event space, elevator access to the ballroom, an entrance from Duke Street, a historical museum, entertainment in the lobby and extended-stay suites.
"We think it’s really important to hear from the community on how they want the hotel to function," Nace said.
During the meeting, attendees inquired about the everything from the historic draperies and the possibility of a downtown club to the inclusion of a shuttle service for guests.
Another piece of the Yorktowne project campus that was discussed was a building that was formerly home to the Zion Lutheran Church at 36 S. Duke St.
The authority purchased the building in 2016, which has been vacant since 1995 after Zion Lutheran moved to West Manchester Township, said Kimberly Hogeman, manager of strategic development for the York County Economic Alliance. Though renovations to the building are not included in the $30 million budget, Hogeman said it’s the authority’s intention to determine a use that will complement the Yorktowne a year or so after the hotel has been up and running.
In the meantime, the authority has received approval to perform an archaeological dig to move more than 50 headstones and graves 100 feet on the Zion Lutheran property - closer to the South Duke side. Hogeman anticipates the work will begin during the second week of July.
The project’s construction manager, Kinsley Construction Inc., opened the next round of bidding on the project on Wednesday. There are 47 bidding packages available, with the next round opening later this summer.
