The CEO of the University of Pennsylvania Health System, the Philadelphia-based parent of Lancaster General Health, plans to step down from his position in June 2019, the health system said Tuesday.

Ralph W. Muller became CEO of Penn Medicine, formally the University of Pennsylvania Health System, in 2003. He oversaw construction of new facilities and the system's geographical expansion, including its affiliation with Lancaster General Health in 2015

He discussed the affiliation and other health care matters in a 2015 interview with the Central Penn Business Journal.

In announcing his retirement plans, Penn Medicine officials credited Muller with being a driving force behind the system's partnerships with insurers like Independence Blue Cross and helping create the Penn Medicine Center for Health Care Innovation, which brings together physicians, nurses and social scientists to test new models of health care.

"Penn Medicine’s stellar national position as one of the nation’s premier integrated academic medical center is a reflection of Ralph’s dedication, expertise and his innumerable contributions," University of Pennsylvania President Amy Gutmann said in a statement.

Before joining Penn Medicine, Muller was president of the University of Chicago Hospitals and Health System from 1985 to 2001. He also previously held senior posts with the commonwealth of Massachusetts.

Gutmann and Dr. J. Larry Jameson, an executive vice president at Penn and dean of the Perelman School of Medicine, will lead a national search for a successor with the input of a search advisory committee.
