Mowery expands leadership team

As the pace of warehouse construction and other commercial work picks up, a Cumberland County construction firm is expanding its leadership team.

Silver Spring Township-based R.S. Mowery & Sons Inc., which does business as Mowery, announced this week that it has promoted three people to senior leadership roles while the company recruits new leaders to fill their old roles.

President David Cross said Seth Hughes, Bill Sutton and David Stansbury have all been promoted to vice-president roles with the company. Hughes is now vice president of preconstruction after serving as director of logistics; Sutton has been elevated from project manager to vice president of business development; and Stansbury has moved from controller to vice president of finance.

"These promotions are a part of our continuous strategic planning for the future," Cross said.

Mowery has added five people over the last year and is up to 70 employees. Cross intends to hire a few more people this summer to expand the teams around the three new vice presidents.

"Seth was brought in to the company with the specific plan of transitioning into this role," Cross said. "We are actively working through the transition with David and expect to hire additional resources in his department by the end of June. We have been in search of two additional senior-level project managers, one to replace Bill and another to assist with our continued growth."

Mowery finished last year with $137.8 million in revenue. Cross said company revenue is up about 60 percent this year, reflecting strong demand for large distribution and warehouse facilities as well as auto-dealership renovations.

"The industrial markets do not seem to be slowing down," he said. "This is the largest contributor to our growth. However, most of our primary vertical markets have also continued to grow."

In addition to the industrial and auto markets, Mowery also is known for building senior-living communities and higher education buildings. And the company has been doing more small adaptive reuse work, typically renovations under $500,000, in Harrisburg and York.

Cross bought the company last year from longtime owner Don Mowery. Cross is the first owner from outside the family circle.
