Animals can be adopted for free this weekend at the Humane League of Lancaster County.

The adoption weekend will begin this Saturday and run through Monday. More than one animal may be adopted for free by the same person.

WGAL-TV reporter Meredith Jorgenson Cooke and her husband, Dr. Chris Cooke are sponsoring the weekend for the fourth year in celebration of National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day on April 30.

“It’s important to us that pets have a safe, loving home,” Jorgenson Cooke said in a statement. “We hope that families who don’t have to pay the adoption fee for an animal can instead use that money to buy food, toys and vet care for their new pet.”

Adoptions include spaying or neutering, vaccinations, microchip registration and the Humane Pennsylvania’s 30-day adoption health guarantee meaning that if an animal is ill, the Humane League will treat the animal for free.

Normal adoption policies including proof of identity, residence and dog owner's licenses, still apply.

On average, 30-50 animals are adopted over the free adoption weekends, Brian Pinto, chief advancement officer of Humane Pennsylvania, said.

Animals available for adoption can be viewed on the humane league’s website or at the shelter located at 2195 Lincoln Highway East in East Lampeter Township.
