York-based Apple Retail Properties, part of Stewart Group Inc., has broken ground on a new retail strip center in Virginia, the company's latest project outside Pennsylvania.

The new project, dubbed The Shops at Lake Wright, is near the Norfolk Premium Outlets in Norfolk, Va. The eight-acre site, just off Interstate 64, will feature two 11,000-square-foot buildings with parcels available for future expansion.

A Chick-fil-A will open at the front of the site. Other tenants have not yet been announced.

Virginia-based Hourigan Construction is overseeing the construction with site work beginning in mid-April. Building construction is set to begin this summer and tenants are expected to move in toward the end of the year.

Apple Retail officials declined comment on construction costs for the new retail center, which is being designed by York-based Mula Design. The civil engineer is Virginia-based Timmons Group.

Apple Retail, which owns several retail sites in Cumberland, Dauphin and York counties, has four properties in Virginia.

The company also is expanding its holdings into other states. It currently has a project under construction in Charlotte, N.C., and officials are actively seeking other opportunities in the Southeast.

Real cool to see apple expanding in Virginia. I wonder if they have plans for construction of a bigger facility in the near future.

Cool to see my hometown undergoing more and more development. I've settled up in Houston now and it's crazy when you compare the urban development with such a large metropolis.

Any time I see that a Chick-Fil-A is coming in I get excited. It usually helps real estate too as more homes for sale come available.

This will be great for the area and I love to see Apple branching out because I have them as a big chunk of my investment portfolio.
