Axe-throwing bar trend coming to Harrisburg area

Harrisburg-area bar customers routinely throw back shots of whiskey and play the occasional game of darts, but a new national bar trend is about to swing into the midstate.

Kamionka Entertainment Group, which operates several bars in and around Harrisburg, will unveil axe-throwing lanes at Joe K's Brewhouse in Susquehanna Township next week.

The new throwing venue, called Generation Axe, will feature six interior axe-throwing lanes, beginning March 6. Joe K's will add 12 outdoor lanes this spring.

"We bring big-city trends to a smaller market, and axe-throwing is one of the hottest concepts going," said Ron Kamionka, president of Kamionka Entertainment Group.

Axe-throwing bars can be found in big cities such as Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and outside Baltimore. The trend originated in Canada.

Generation Axe will have on-site "Axe-perts" to provide axe-throwing tutorials and etiquette as well as to supervise play, Kamionka said. "Safety is our No. 1 concern."

Players must be at least 21 to play and visibly intoxicated people will be prohibited from playing, along with anyone with pre-existing neck, back, leg or arm injuries. No open-toed shoes or heels are permitted on throwing lanes.

Leagues and tournament play will begin in spring, officials said. Reservations also can be made for groups or corporate events. Axe-throwing lanes at Joe K's will be open daily from 4 p.m. to midnight.
