Danielle Hoffer was hired to run the internal human resources group at RKL. Five years later, she is leading the firm's new HR consulting practice.

"I was here to design an HR team. It didn’t take very long for that to change. I had clients who I had worked with in the past reach out to me for advice, and it kind of just went from there," Hoffer said.

The new practice specializes in HR areas such as complying with regulatory issues, filling leadership roles, training new recruits and developing compensation packages.

RKL isn't the only CPA firm transforming its business strategy into more of a consulting model. Other local accounting firms such as Simon Lever in Lititz and Stambaugh Ness in York have undergone similar transitions.

RKL already had been offering HR consulting to clients in manufacturing, professional services, government, health care and the nonprofit sector. The new division formalizes the practice.

"This practice grew out of clients tapping into the strong HR leadership we have here at RKL and has taken off from there," RKL CEO Edward W. Monborne said in a statement.

Nearly 50 of the 400 employees at RKL work for the firm's business consulting team. In addition to HR services, they offer operations, risk management, business valuation, litigation support, IT/cybersecurity assessments, and assistance in mergers and acquisitions.

Hoffer is embracing her new role.

"I see the HR consulting practice evolving with our clients’ needs and the cultural, generational, regulatory changes ahead for the workforce. There are many people issues that are going to change into the future – I can’t exactly say how, but our job will be to help our clients navigate a shifting landscape," Hoffer said.

RKL has offices in Lancaster, Reading, York, Harrisburg and Mechanicsburg.
