Brandalynn Armstrong of Zeroday Brewing Co., recently joined the board of the Brewers of Pennsylvania, a trade organization that has grown significantly this decade as craft breweries pop up around the state.

Zeroday is among Pennsylvania's newcomers, having opened in Midtown Harrisburg in 2015. Armstrong has very active in promoting the craft-beer industry. She spoke at the Business Journal's Business of Beer symposium last year and helped support the launch of a brewing science program at HACC.

According to the Brewers Association, the Colorado-based organization that represents small and independent craft breweries across the country, there were more than 5,200 craft breweries in the U.S. at the end of 2016. Pennsylvania was home to more than 200.

The commonwealth's breweries helped Pennsylvania churn out more craft beer than any state in the country with 3.9 million barrels in 2016. Pennsylvania benefits from having America’s oldest and largest craft-beer producer, D.G. Yuengling and Son Inc., based in Schuylkill County.

Pennsylvania also houses a brewery facility for Boston Beer Co., maker of Samuel Adams, the nation’s No. 2 craft-beer company. It is in Lehigh County.

The Brewers of Pennsylvania, which is led by Weyerbacher Brewing Co.'s co-owner Chris Lampe, estimates that it members employ about 10,000 people who earn nearly $300 million in wages. And those craft breweries generate about $1.1 billion in direct economic benefits to communities across the state.
