John A. Fabian always wanted to be a financial planner — or, as the profession used to be known, a stock broker. At first it was because it was what his father did, and he wanted to be just like him when he grew up. Later he realized how interesting it was and fell in love with his job from the start. Fabian believes most people would be surprised to learn about his love of history, and that he almost exclusively reads historical nonfiction. While reading Phil Knight’s memoir about the founding of Nike, he was struck by Knight’s use of a Confucian proverb: “The man who moves a mountain begins by carrying away small stones.” He would pass this advice on to others: Making change starts with the first step, no matter how small. Keep perspective and stay committed. In his free time, Fabian enjoys spending time with his family and friends, cooking, hands-on home improvement projects and golfing.
