Alex J. Hayes’s first job was delivering copies of the Shamokin News-Item six days a week. He learned to be a dependable worker because even when the weather was bad, he felt sick or he wanted to skip to hang out with friends, he knew it was his responsibility to provide paying customers their papers. He considers it his biggest success that in an era when newspapers are supposedly irrelevant to many members of the community, the Gettysburg Times stands out. Every day, readers provide feedback, and community leaders constantly request they share news. This proves to Hayes that the Gettysburg Times is still a publication that ties the community together. Living in Central Pennsylvania has led him to appreciate people from all walks of life, and Hayes encourages others to reach out to people with different backgrounds. In five years, he sees himself continuing to do what he can to use the newspaper to build a stronger Adams County.
