German discount grocery chain Aldi plans to open a new Cumberland County store next year as part of its expansion plan in the U.S.

Aldi Frederick Division vice president Jeff Baehr said the chain is in the early stages of developing a store at 6476 Carlisle Pike in Silver Spring Township, site of a former Fire Mountain restaurant and adjacent to Appalachian Brewing Co.

Bennett Williams Commercial's Chad Stine and Brad Rohrbaugh represented Aldi in the lease of the property.

Baehr said the new Cumberland County store will fit the company's prototype model, which is about 11,000 square feet with four or five main aisles of products. It is not clear when construction might begin.

"When it comes to choosing store locations, we look at a lot of factors, including population density, proximity to competition, cost of the property and traffic patterns," he said.

Cumberland County has been the fastest-growing county in Pennsylvania this decade. And Silver Spring Township, which is part of the Cumberland Valley School District, is a big reason for that population growth.

Aldi has said it expects to have a total of 2,500 locations across the U.S. by 2022. The chain has more than 1,600 now, with plans to reach nearly 2,000 this year.

Central Pennsylvania is no stranger to growth in the discount retail space. In addition to grocery chains like Aldi and competitors Grocery Outlet and Lidl adding new stores, the midstate is home to many deep-discount chains, including Ollie's Bargain Outlet.
