With an eye on savings, Capital Area Transit is looking to discontinue and consolidate certain bus routes next year.

Harrisburg-based CAT, which serves Cumberland and Dauphin counties, announced today that it will hold three public meetings this month to gather input for the transit agency's proposed 2018 service changes. The CAT board of directors is expected to receive a final list of recommendations at a Dec. 21 board meeting.

Interim General Manager Tom Reynolds said the board has already said it wants an 8 percent reduction in service costs, so changes are coming. The agency has tentatively proposed to discontinue its Route 3/6 Night Loop route due to low ridership. It also may cancel its Route F-Enola route for the same reason.

In addition, several other routes could be consolidated to improve system efficiency and improve on-time performance, CAT officials said. A full list of proposed service changes can be found here.

CAT estimates that the proposed service changes could save about $1 million.

The public outreach meetings are slated for:

  • Dec. 7 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Strawberry Square, 320 Market St., Harrisburg
  • Dec. 8 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Keystone Building, 400 North St., Harrisburg
  • Dec. 11 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the East Pennsboro Township Municipal Building, 98 S. Enola Drive, East Pennsboro Township

In advance of those meetings, CAT riders with comments are encouraged to email Robert Philbin, the agency's public information officer, at rphilbin@cattransit.com.

It is very necessary to introduce some new bus routes so that everyone can enjoy the trip and save little money. I appreciate the thoughts and I have read that they have already started some of the new trips. Keep updating such valuable and interesting news.

I understand the need to save money but public transportation should be just that a way for people who don't drive to get around and that includes all over. Some people work in the area that is being considered for discontinuation but I guess if it saves CAT but cost others their jobs, mission accomplished..
