Huntington Bank, a $102-billion-asset institution from Ohio, is planting the first seeds of what its leaders hope will be a growing presence in Central Pennsylvania.

Huntington opened its first midstate commercial banking office Nov. 1 at 2173 Embassy Drive in East Hempfield Township, Lancaster County.

The bank then announced earlier this week that Philip Brenckle - a former PNC commercial banking relationship manager who joined Huntington this summer - will lead efforts to grow ties in the region.

Huntington hopes to cater to a variety middle-market businesses here, ranging from agribusinesses to professional services firms. The bank's leadership plans to build a local team that includes relationship managers, a portfolio manager, a treasury management officer, an equipment finance sales partner and an asset-based lending professional.

It also plans to open a Harrisburg office.

"We are making a real and significant investment in this area," Jim Altman, Huntington's regional executive for Pennsylvania commercial banking, said in a news release.

Brenckle, who will report to Altman, also hopes to stay active in the local community. He lives in the Hershey area and serves on boards for the Lancaster County Career and Technology Center Foundation, executive training program ExecuStar and the Four Diamonds Fund.

Huntington has 958 branches in eight states, mostly in the Midwest. Its largest Pennsylvania presence is in the Pittsburgh area, where it has about a dozen branches.
