WellSpan Health kicked off construction this week on an 80,000-square-foot space in Penn Township that will house an outpatient surgery suite, lab and imaging services, and primary care and specialty physician offices.

Announced in August and projected for a fall 2018 opening, the Hanover Health Center brings more health care resources to residents of southwestern York County.

The facility will be located at 1227 Baltimore St. in Hanover and will be constructed in two phases.

First will come the outpatient surgery suite with four operating rooms and four specialty procedure rooms.

They will be followed by primary and specialty care offices, with up to 36 exam rooms and treatment areas.

"We are excited to start another chapter that bolsters an already strong system of local care," WellSpan Health president and CEO Kevin Mosser said, referencing WellSpan's nearly 140-year history in the area.

The area's other major health care facility, Hanover Hospital, has been aligning more closely with UPMC Pinnacle
