Pennsylvania's top fiscal watchdog wants to make sure the state is doing the best it can to prepare workers for an ever-changing job market.

Auditor General Eugene DePasquale said this week that his department will conduct a performance audit to see if the state's workforce development effort, which reaches across five state agencies, is properly preparing workers.

"I want to make sure we are doing everything possible to have the best-trained workers in the world," DePasquale, a Democrat who's in his second term as auditor general, said in a news release from his office.

The audit aims to determine if Pennsylvania’s workforce development process is able to:

 Identify current and future needs of employers in the state.

 Coordinate educational institutions and employment-service programs to meet the needs of employers and enhance Pennsylvania’s economic competitiveness.

 Assist older and/or displaced workers in updating their skills to re-enter the workforce.

 Evaluate the state Department of Labor & Industry’s oversight of the workforce development system. The system includes the state Education, Community and Economic Development, Human Services and Aging departments.

The audit will cover the period from Jan. 1, 2014 until the audit is completed.

"Pennsylvania has a diverse economy, and we need a cohesive and agile system that can adapt to meet the needs of workers and businesses," DePasquale also said.
