Practitioners who want to participate in the state's medical marijuana program can begin the process by enrolling in a new registry, Health Department officials said Tuesday.

Initial details about the program were disseminated via email this morning.

"Since April 2016, we’ve been working to implement a patient-focused Medical Marijuana Program for Pennsylvanians in desperate need of medication," acting Secretary of Health and Physician General Dr. Rachel Levine said in a statement included in the email.

"Many physicians treat these patients every day and understand the impact this medication could have on their treatment. Once these physicians register and complete the required continuing education, they can be approved to participate in the program," Levine added.

Two continuing education providers have been approved to offer the four-hour training required for practitioners: The Answer Page Inc. and Extra Step Assurance LLC.

Practitioners with questions about the medical marijuana program were instructed to email RA-DHMedMarijuana@pa.gov, or visit the department's medical marijuana website.

That site includes a login page for interested physicians.

Participation in the registry and training is compulsory for physicians who want to participate in the medical marijuana program, department spokesperson April Hutcheson said.

Fees for the training courses will be market-based and set by the providers, she added.

The program became effective on May 17, 2016, and is expected to be fully implemented by 2018. It will offer medical marijuana to patients who are residents of Pennsylvania and under a physician’s care for the treatment of a serious medical condition.

The first round of dispensary and grower licensees were named last month.
