Derry Township-based Troegs Brewing Co., the midstate's largest craft brewery and one of the top beer producers in the country, is again expanding its physical footprint.

Construction has started on an expansion of the brewery's east parking lot, which will double in size to about 175 to 200 parking spaces, according to contractor Pyramid Construction Services Inc.

Parking and traffic flow have long been a challenge for the popular brewery at 200 E. Hershey Park Drive, which has continued to add production capacity since moving to Derry Township from Harrisburg in 2011.

The Brewers Association recently ranked Troegs No. 38 on it craft list and No. 47 overall on its annual list of the top 50 breweries in the country.

The expanded parking area is expected to be done by the end of June. While construction is underway, the brewery will open a temporary stone lot so it doesn't lose any current parking capacity, officials said in a blog post.

The entrance off Hershey Park Drive will remain open.

"We started planning and permitting this well over a year ago," said Chris Trogner, who co-owns Troegs with his brother John. "This project takes us right up to the edge of the property we lease. It's exciting to finally get moving."

Meanwhile, Troegs also is planning an expanded beer garden area to accommodate more visitors. The brewery is close to many of the Hershey attractions, including Hersheypark and the Tanger Outlets.

"Seating plans are still not finalized as the parking project needs to be completed first," said Jeff Herb, a brewery spokesman.
