As a self-described flooring-product geek, if Scott J. Appel were a piece of technology, he would be a robust “FloorExpert” app, with features and tools that provide technical specifications on carpet and flooring. Passionate about his job, he advises others that nothing takes the place of hard work.

Appel acknowledges the importance of making mistakes, and not being afraid to make them. Most people would be surprised to learn that Appel is a stage 2 melanoma skin-cancer survivor and has been cancer-free for one year. “Perseverant” is one way to describe him, but Appel would also describe himself as driven and motivated, especially by his four young children.

He recalls his first job at McDonald’s, where he cleaned bathrooms and floors and learned the value of hard work. In his free time, he enjoys his family, extreme fitness training and traveling the world. Appel intends to spend his 40th birthday at home with friends and family on New Year’s Day.
