A crowded green roomRising stars join midstate's top private companies on big stage

By ,

Most of the big-name acts in Central Pennsylvania are back on the marquee for this year's edition of the Top 100/250 private companies.

Perennial favorites on the Business Journal charts continued to make the right business decisions in 2015 to move up the list. However, for some, increased sales didn’t guarantee a spot in this year’s Top 100 rotation, although they made the Top 250, a list that will be available online.

Hampden Township-based Morefield Communications Inc. grew its revenue by more than 6 percent, but remained in the No. 102 spot.

Upper Allen Township-based Advantage Engineers LLC added more than 22 percent in revenue from 2014, but advanced only to No. 103 after claiming the No. 110 spot last year.

However, Swatara Township-based Herbert Rowland & Grubic Inc. increased revenue by almost 6 percent to $26.5 million and held on to the No. 100 spot in our countdown.

York Excavating Co. LLC in Windsor Township jumped to No. 106 this year with a 47 percent increase in revenue, while The Witmer Group rose to No. 107 with a 19 percent boost in sales.

Harrisburg-based WebpageFx Inc. cracked the top 150 this year as revenue jumped by nearly 54 percent.

Hard to get a backstage pass

Grabbing a backstage pass to the show continues to get harder as more companies are crossing the $20 million mark. More money often means a bigger entourage, or workforce.

There were 119 companies above $20 million this year, up from 114 companies last year — a list anchored by Swatara Township-based Skelly and Loy Inc.

This year’s list also produced 25 companies in the Top 100 who grew revenue by more than 20 percent from 2014. That was up from 18 companies last year.

And there were 33 companies that rocked out to the tune of more than $100 million in revenue, up from 29 last year.

Nine of the top 10 companies also were headliners last year. There is one “newcomer”: East Pennsboro Township-based Gannett Fleming Inc., which claimed No. 9 on the charts after finishing at No. 11 last year.

Harrisburg-based Quandel Enterprises Inc., last year’s No. 9 company, fell to No. 15 after revenue dipped by 17 percent in 2015.

Eight of the top 10 companies reported revenue increases over 2014, while Manchester Township-based Rutter’s Holdings Inc. and York-based Shipley Group finished lower.

At No. 5, Rutter’s saw revenue drop by 16 percent, while Shipley was off by 29 percent from 2014.

Still icons

The icons in the green room are still D&H Distributing Co. Inc. and Vibra Healthcare LLC.

D&H, based in Harrisburg, added more than 4 percent to its revenue haul to finish at $3.5 billion last year. Top-ranked D&H has been the big-ticket act on the CPBJ list since it began disclosing revenue. D&H had revenue of $1.9 billion in 2007, which put the company atop the 2008 Top 100 list.

Lower Allen Township-based Vibra, which was No. 17 on that 2008 list, has been chasing D&H. The list’s No. 2 company cracked $1 billion in revenue last year for the first time, with annual growth of more than 10 percent.

D&H and Vibra are poised to remain the top headliners in the midstate for the foreseeable future. But we know the next big singer-songwriter is out there looking to “break on through to the other side.” l
