Harrisburg-area Stroehmann Bakery to close
About 90 workers at Stroehmann Bakery on Paxton Street are losing their jobs after company officials announced Tuesday the bakery will close.
In a letter to the state, Bimbo Bakeries USA Inc., which purchased the Stroehmann bakery in 2009, said the 3996 Paxton St. plant, in Swatara Township, will cease production Sept. 19. Employees will be paid and receive full benefits through Nov. 1, the letter said.
Many employees are members of the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers' and Grain Millers union, BCTGM Local No. 464 of Hershey. Sara Goulet, spokeswoman for the state Department of Labor & Industry, said the company has not indicated whether laid-off employees will be offered positions at other plants.
Bimbo opened a a 240,000-square-foot commercial bakery in Breinigsville, Pa., earlier this year. The letter from John Bowden, a regional vice president for Bimbo, said "company policy contains no provisions for transfer or re-assignment."
Bimbo will continue to maintain the depot at the Paxton Street site, the letter said.
Goulet said it isn't unusual for the state to receive notice of a plant closure after it has been announced to workers. Labor & Industry is sending a Rapid Response team to assist Stroehmann workers with tasks such as unemployment filings and benefits paperwork, she added.
