The Employment Skills Center in Carlisle has received a $10,000 grant from the PNC Foundation to become an official GED testing center.
The center will use the Pearson Vue testing service, said ESC Executive Director Margaret Weitzel, which means it can administer hundreds of additional tests besides the GED, including real estate license exams, for example.
“We’re very excited about this," she said. "The holdup was we had to get all our technology up to date."
Until the end of December 2013, GED exams were administered in traditional pencil-and-paper format. Never an official test center, ESC sent clients to Harrisburg Area Community College or the Tri-County Adult Learning Center in Harrisburg to take the GED exam.
Now, clients will be able to take the test at the ESC offices at 29 S. Hanover St. in Carlisle. The center should be ready in late October, Weitzel said.
"We do expect to see a lot of traffic once things get up and running here,” she added.
The PNC grant will help pay for new carpeting, some painting, IT needs, cameras and fingerprint pads and upgraded memory in ESC computers, Weitzel said.
The ESC will be the only GED testing center in Cumberland County.
