Shippensburg University, Orrstown Bank sign internship pact

By ,

Shippensburg University and Orrstown Bank signed an agreement Thursday to allow a team of students to work on technology-related projects for the bank.

The partnership will give the Shippensburg students an internship that will allow them to "become immersed in a real-life bank project," the university said in a news release. It will also give them a new opportunity to be involved in a financial services offering while reinforcing the university’s emphasis on experiential learning, officials said.

“One hallmark of Shippensburg University is its ability to offer students the opportunity to enhance their classroom work with hands-on experience with major employers and industries in the region,” said interim SU President Jody Harpster. “These experiences provide students with valuable skills they will need after they graduate and provide the firms with talented students who bring new perspectives to the work. These partnerships show the value each of us receives from such collaborative efforts.”

Shippensburg offers students internships in many fields, but officials said the Orrstown program is unique in that it is being offered as a team endeavor rather than as an internship for an individual student.

The team will work on “real-life projects with deliverables, real-life implementation dates, and ultimately an evaluation of their success," the release said.

The partnership will begin this fall and will be conducted via group and individual sessions at the bank’s facilities and on campus. Justin English, director of business internships and MBA recruitment at the university, is the university’s coordinator for the program and will be involved in recruiting team members.

Students from all three of Shippensburg’s colleges, arts and sciences, business, and education and human services, will be eligible to participate in the program.
