Voith Hydro part of Iowa dam retrofitting

By ,

Voith Hydro Inc. is providing turbines, generators and associated controls for a hydro power retrofit project in Iowa.

Voith, which has a facility in West Manchester Township, York County, is working with Missouri River Energy Services on the Red Rock Hydroelectric Project, which will retrofit the Lake Red Rock Dam near Pella, Iowa, to provide up to 55MW of power during peak seasons, according to a news release.

Ground was broken on the project Wednesday. Once completed, the dam will provide power for an estimated 18,000 homes and businesses. The target completion date is 2018.

It was not clear if the equipment would be manufactured at the York County facility or at another of Voith Hydro’s sites around the world. A message left for a company spokesman was not immediately returned.

Lake Red Rock is an Army Corps of Engineers facility used for flood control and recreation, according to the release. The retrofit will provide power to Missouri River Energy Services’ 61 municipal customers across Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota. The project was added to the Federal Infrastructure Permitting dashboard, which is designed to expedite critical infrastructure projects, according to Voith.

Voith has been heavily involved in retrofitting dams so they can produce electricity in the United States. Voith products were used in the Badger Hydro Plant in Kaukauna, Wis., which went online in May. It also was involved in the completed expansion of PPL Generation’s Holtwood Hydroelectric Facility on the Susquehanna River between York and Lancaster counties and AMP’s Ohio River projects.

Voith Hydro, a group division of Voith GmbH, specializes in hydroelectric power-generation equipment. The parent company also owns Voith Turbo in Manchester Township. Founded in 1867, Voith employs more than 43,000 people, generates $7.7 billion in sales, operates in about 50 countries around the world and is one of the largest family-owned companies in Europe.
