PinnacleHealth announced today that the $20 million Ortenzio Cancer Center on its West Shore Campus in Hampden Township will open Aug. 18.
"The 26,000-square-foot center fulfills PinnacleHealth’s vision for integrated, patient-centered care by putting invaluable cancer services on the same campus as the West Shore Hospital and the Fredricksen Outpatient Center, offering a full continuum of high quality services where patients need it, close to home," a news release said.
The center is at 2035 Technology Parkway and will provide comprehensive oncology services in multiple specialty areas, including cancer risk assessment, women’s cancer treatment, radiation oncology, medical oncology, infusion services and cancer clinical trials. Its features include an on-site laboratory, infusion areas "designed for maximum patient comfort and privacy" and a tranquility garden.
Construction on the $20 million facility began last summer. The project was funded by a donation from The Ortenzio Foundation, for which it is named, as well as community and corporate donors.
“PinnacleHealth is currently the largest provider of both breast and gynecologic cancer services in the area,” Nicholas DeLapo, PinnacleHealth's vice president for oncology services, said in a news release. “Because we are seeing more and more women — often as young as in their 20s — diagnosed with breast and gynecologic cancer, it is imperative that PinnacleHealth has the most leading-edge oncology services in place to aggressively battle these treatable and often curable diseases.”
PinnacleHealth said the Ortenzio Cancer Center will complement its existing PinnacleHealth Cancer Center on the Community Campus in Dauphin County.
According to the news release, projections show at least 27,000 midstate patients living with cancer over the next five years, of which 38 percent are expected to be women with breast or cervical cancer.
The new cancer center is part of PinnacleHealth's Vision 2017 strategic plan, which included the opening of the West Shore Hospital earlier this year.
