Pennsylvania American Water acquires three water, wastewater systems

By ,

Derry Township-based Pennsylvania American Water Co. has marginally expanded its water and wastewater services with three acquisitions in Clarion, Lackawanna and Northampton counties, the commonwealth's largest water utility announced Thursday.

Pennsylvania American Water said it is spending $1.4 million to acquire a municipal wastewater system, municipal water system and a privately operated water system.

In Clarion County, the acquisition of the Paint-Elk Joint Sewer Authority adds 1,000 wastewater customers to the company’s 15,000-customer service base in adjacent counties.

The utility also has wastewater operations in Beaver, Chester, Monroe, Pike and Washington counties.

In Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania American Water purchased the water system assets of Scott Township. That system  serves the Scott Technology Park, which has five commercial and industrial customers, as well as the business park’s wastewater treatment facility.

The utility is planning significant capital investments there to upgrade water lines and improve the park’s water supply.

In Northampton County, the company acquired the assets of the Berry Hollow Water Co., which serves nearly 70 residents in Lower Bethel Township.

Pennsylvania American Water, a subsidiary of American Water Works Co. Inc., serves about 2.1 million people in Pennsylvania. The Dauphin County company was responsible for $571.2 million in regulated businesses operating revenue last year, according to the parent company’s annual report.
