The owners of the Gingerbread Man restaurant, a midstate-based chain that once had 19 locations, including two in Maryland, is now down to two Cumberland County facilities.

The Phelan family has sold its downtown Harrisburg location to Strawberry Square. Effective today, the capital city’s Gingerbread Man closed its doors.

Richard Phelan, founder of the chain, said the family wants to focus on just its Carlisle and Mechanicsburg locations in order to spend more time with family.

The Harrisburg location was open for 18 years.

Brad Jones, vice president of community development for Harristown Enterprises Inc., said Strawberry Square expects to acquire the liquor license and the restaurant equipment. The 8,000-square-foot facility will be remarketed as a restaurant.

“It’s been a good run, a long run for any restaurant,” he said. “We’re excited to remarket the property.”

Jones said they already have a few prospects. The preference would be a local or regional brand, but Strawberry Square is not against a national chain with interest.

“One of the unique things about the Harrisburg restaurant scene is that it’s pretty local and authentic,” he said. “We like that concept. It’s probably more in line with our market.”

Jones said he is optimistic they will have the space filled by the first quarter of 2015. A turnkey operation with a liquor license should be very attractive in Harrisburg, he said: “It’s a great spot with outdoor dining.”

This is terrible. This really was a spot to go and let loose after work. Great staff they had. However, Perhaps Jean Downs Bowman will have to take me to the Gman in Camp Hill now.
