Coakley's Restaurant closed by bankruptcy court order


Coakley's Restaurant and Irish Pub, a popular New Cumberland site, has been closed by order of the Bankruptcy Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania.

The pub shut its doors at 12:01 this morning. Owner Tim Hogg posted a letter to patrons on the front door.

"We would like to thank everybody for their patronage over the years and we hope you root for us to return to business soon," he wrote.

Hogg could not be reached for comment this morning. He promised updates on Coakley's Facebook page.

Hogg purchased the restaurant in 2008 from Richard and Sue Coakley, who started the pub more than 33 years ago when it was New Cumberland Olde Towne Tavern.

An outdoor sidewalk seating option was added in 2010 and two outdoor decks were built in 2010 and 2011.

"I cannot tell you how much I will miss everyone and what a great experience this has been," Hogg wrote.

According to documents filed with the bankruptcy court, Hogg fell behind on payments to Community First Fund, a nonprofit lender of small-business loans based in Lancaster.

 CFF financed Hogg’s purchase of Coakley’s with a $160,000 loan. Payments were set at $1,936 per month for 10 years. As of Nov. 21, 2013, CFF attorneys say Hogg owed CFF $103,319.18, including late fees, interest and penalties, documents state.

The article is incorrect as to why the Bankruptcy Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania ordered the pub closed. As counsel to Community First Fund in this matter, we were successful in getting the Bankruptcy Court to approve a stipulation entered into between CFF and the debtor regarding the arrearages due to CFF and ongoing payments. We were hopeful that the pub would succeed. Had the author of the article carefully reviewed the Bankruptcy Court docket, he would have seen that the U.S. Trustee, Labor and Industry and certain other creditors sought and were successful in motioning the court for conversion of the case to a chapter 7 liquidation. CFF did not join in with filing any motion seeking conversion or dismissal of the case.

This place was such a dump! They wait staff ( at least the ones I seemed to repeatedly encounter) were completely incompetent and more rude than all get out! I came there once to meet up with some friends and have a few drinks, the waitress gave me shit for sitting and waiting for people to show up! I said initially "I will be ordering something, but I'm waiting for my friends to show." She says " you should feel sorry, this is how some people make their rent." I hope she got evicted. Some people do not have what it takes to work in the service industry, and thy type of people who put up with employees like the one in question obviously do not know how to run a business right.

Nice. They just sold restaurant deals on Wink 104's Sweet Deals less than a month ago. Now those of us who purchased those "deals" are SOL. Horrible!

EXTREMELY disappointed to hear this... especially since we booked their downstairs room/bar for a wedding event in October and they did not mention that they were in such dire straights. I'm hoping they do contact us soon... and return our deposit...
